After completing Valvrave I, I needed a complete change, and it was time to put off the 1/100 MG Unicorn Full Armor no longer! For a 1/100 this is a big kit, with a box packed chock-full of runners and thicker-than-usual manual. I started with some Alclad polished aluminium on the thrusters, first painting in the insides while on the runner, then cutting out, trimming nubs and sticking to some masking tape so I can easily spray the outside. I’ve covered with some Finish to ensure I don’t muck up the nice Alclad finish with my grubby fingers and to give a good surface to do some detailing later.Theres not many blue pieces on the model, so time to try something new. I could have used the Tamiya dark blue that I used on PG Strike Freedom, but I fancied something a bit more metallic. The Tamiya clear blue over Alclad is nice, but way too glitzy for this mech, so what I ended up doing is Createx pearl blue, with an over-coat of Tamiya smoke. The smoke, being clear allows you to see the metallic effect, but it also darkens down the blue making it a better match to the colour of the underlying plastic. I added a few small details with some Tamiya smoke by hand too. There’s a fair few white runners on this kit, so I mixed up some grey paint using Createx white, a few drops of black and some Finish to thin it down a bit. I’d tried Createx white with added Finish on Valvrave I and it worked well, so I knew that it would be nice for the grey on this kit. Why grey you ask? Well, I intend to pain these pieces white (with perhaps some Createx white pearl too) with some masking for areas I wish to stay grey. I like the clean look of this kit, but I do want to make the armour appear a bit more three-dimensional than just a plain white paint job.
Oh I had so much work on this guy back in february. Took me ~ 3 weeks to complete this monster of a brick. The neverending ocean of parts. Once you complete the kit itself you need to tackle with the weapons, which could easily be compared to another MG in complexity, number of parts and the time needed to paint all the details. I’m very much curious to see what yours will look like. I’m sure kit this big will be posted on hljtv too once completed. Should give me more than enough time to take some photos of mine to compare the two and enjoy our bricks the way they should be enjoyed. I wish you good luck as it’s a damn tricky build. I’ve built an MG Banshee before this guy, did something else and jumped on this huge box. All I can say is that I never want to see another Unicorn kit again in my life. Meant for me to build it that is. 🙂
I think this is going to take me longer than 3 weeks! But I don’t mind taking my fair time on these kits as the end result is usually proportional to the patience exhibited during the build and paint process.
